Unit Board Question
This unit’s readings illustrate some issues with the treatment of women and minorities that still resonate today in the United States.
For instance, U.S. sports teams with Native American names or references, such as the Atlanta Braves, the Washington Redskins, or the Florida State Seminoles, continue to come under fire for appropriating and/or misrepresenting Native American culture and heritage. This is not that different than the “Eurocentric” appropriation of Native American culture charges some aimed against Captain John Smith in the past or at Disney today.
Another issue in American sports that came to light in 2016 was the disparity in income between men’s and women’s soccer teams, with professional women players earning far less than their male counterparts. Furthermore, during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, candidates continued to debate other women’s issues such as the right to an abortion. Donald Trump of the Republican Party came under fire for stating that U.S. women seeking an abortion should be subject to “some form of punishment” if the procedure is outlawed; Trump’s statement caused some anxiety among U.S. women and politicians, which was not that much different from concerns expressed during the Puritan era if you closely examine the writings of Bradford and Bradstreet.
For this unit’s discussion, using a quote from at least one of your assigned readings, synthesize that quote into a discussion on either the use of Native American names in U.S. sports or a current debate about women or minorities in the United States.
